Symmetrical Face Drawing Practice

You will be drawing the other half of your face using the blending value technique this week. You will follow these directions to get you started! If you have any questions just ask!! (or post a comment below!) The steps are as follows...

Image Instructions:
1. First, open the photo booth application on your laptop.
2. Please take a photo of yourself with no smile, that is a straight on mug shot. There can be no tilts to your head what so ever. You must be able to see all of your chin and the crown of your head.
3. Once you have a good image, send the photo to "iPhoto" by clicking the icon between your photos taken and the view finder.
4. After your photo is in iPhoto click "edit" and change the size to 5x7. Do not use the "custom" feature.
5. Crop the photo to where only your entire face including the chin and the tip top of your head fill the space.
6. Next, change your photo into black and white, so that you can see your gray scale. You will need to lighten the photo quite a bit before printing because it will print darker than it looks.
7. At this time you may also want to use the straighten tool in order to make sure your face is completely symmetrical.
8. Finally you will print your image to the HS COLOR LIB printer! Keep your image on the "Standard" & "landscape" settings.
9. Only print ONE copy and watch your printer display to know when it prints. Then you may go pick up your image.
10. Now you are ready to draw!

Drawing Instructions:
1. First you will find the middle of your face by plotting a few points and connecting the dots. (vertical)
2. After you have drawn the line you need to carefully cut along the line to slit your face symmetrically.
3. Next you will turn in one half of your face to me and you will glue the other half to your white paper.
4. Next, you will start to grid your face a bit by creating horizontal lines under, above, and within facial features. This will help you line up your features.
5. After your have drawn you horizontal alignment lines, you will add vertical alignment lines. These lines will show you how your eyes align with you mouth and nose.
6. Once you have all of the line you need you will proceed to drawing the shapes and values that you see. MEASURE, MEASURE, MEASURE!
7. If you are finding this to be difficult flip your paper upside down in order to trick your mind. When you are looking at your face your brain thinks, "oh, I know how this is supposed to look"... IT DOESN'T! Draw with you face upside down and you will look more carefully at your negative and positive spaces.
8. After you have drawn all of your features you will begin to add value to your drawing. Your goal is to lose all of the lines that you have drawn so that the features can look more realistic.

10. Keep your drawings in stacks on your class periods section on the cabinet. Make sure if you keep your that you do not bend it!

GRADES:
Craftsmanship (Neatness, attention to detail)
Value Likeness (How well does your shading match the other half of the photos values?)
Completion (Due date this Thursday at the end of the period, Zero Hall for those incomplete)

HOMEWORK: (optional for a bonus 105)
You will draw an eye, nose, mouth, and ear study drawing. You will use the four rectangle paper hanging on my wall by the white board.the shading must use blending and you must try to lose your lines with in your values. You may use computer print outs or magazine images to draw from. Glue these references to your paper next to the drawings. This assignment is due... THIS FRIDAY!

You will have a substitute today (Thursday) while I am at a workshop. You may post comments and questions to this blog entry and I will get them. I can then call the sub and answer any of your questions or respond to the blog to clarify directions. (ahough@esc17.net)

You may use your laptops for music once you begin drawing but if you are caught messing with the keys too many time to change songs you must put it up! Keep the laptops half closed at all times! You may NOT talk!!! 


"Negative Space" Drawings:

You will draw ONLY the negative space!!! This includes only the area around and in between the objects. This does NOT include the objects, their details, or where they overlap. You will NOT draw lines between where one object overlaps another. Imagine all of the objects becoming one! You may look at the example that I started on my desk.

ONLY FOCUS ON THE NEGATIVE SPACE!!!

Still Life Note Taking & Practice

Today you will receive a handout with two new "Elements of Art" for us to apply to your work.

FORM & VALUE

We will be going over what these elements are and how we use them within a still life drawing.

We will also be reviewing the element SPACE!!! Understanding how positive space and negative space work together will help you take your drawings to the next level.

Once we finish with your notes we will be practicing drawing forms using several different value techniques. These include blending, stippling, stumbling, hatching, cross-hatching, and contour hatching & cross-hatching.

Still Life Study

We will be doing a still life study for this week.

Day 1& 2: First try at a still life. (Use prior knowledge)

Day 3: Draw only the negative space! Do not draw the objects!! Draw the spaces around and in between the objects. (Review= Positive Space, Negative Space)

Day 4: Learn techniques for drawing cubes and lids that lie down. Learn techniques for drawing, adding value, as well as elements, and vocabulary.

(Vocabulary= Form, Value, High Lights, Low Lights, Cast Shadows, High Key, Low Key, Middle Range, Blending, Stippling, Hatching, Cross Hatching)

Day 5: Application of what you have learned! Draw the still life again!
