Welcome back from the weekend!

Art 1 = "Line Designs"

You will continue to learn about what it takes to create a "good" design. Today the focus for the music inspired line designs will be value, variety, and composition. I want to encourage you to use at least 3 values of grey. Your pencil can make light marks, medium marks, and dark marks. Use these values to help create a mood for your designs. I want your design to appear as if it goes on beyond the page. I would like for each design to touch each side of your rectangle. Remember to use a variety of thicknesses and types of lines to add to the expressiveness.

Art 2 = "Exit Through The Gift Shop"

--What are some differences between "Mr. Brainwash" and "Banksy"? Be specific!

--Is the name "Mister Brainwash" fitting for Theirry? How so or why not?

--Would you consider Theirry an artist? Why or why not?

--What makes someone a good artist? What qualities should a good artist have?

--What makes someone a bad artist? What makes their art worthless?

--How do you put a $ value on a work of art? If you had the money, would you buy work from Banksy? Would you buy work from Mister Brainwash?

--What is your opinion of Theirry? (Is he a genius, crazy, mentally ill, a hoarder, a phony, a poser, a loyal friend, a smart business man?)

--What do you think that the art world feels towards "Mister Brainwash"? (art collectors, street artists, friends, family, and you)

--What do you think that the art world feels towards "Banksy"?

--Do you think that as many people would have gone to Mister Brainwash's show if it weren't for hype and the endorsements by Banksy and Shepard Fairey?

--What is the statement Banksy is trying to make with the documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop"?

Copy paste the questions into a word or pages document and answer them to the best of your ability. No group or peer work! No internet research for others opinions!!

"Marks With Emotion"

Today we will be discussing how lines can have feeling. The lines different thicknesses, direction, and length can suggest an emotion that you would like to convey to the viewer. Diagonal lines tend to show action. Horizontal lines suggest calmness, while vertical lines can make one feel alert and order. Zigzag lines tend to be more wild and erratic. Curved lines tend to seem more flowing and relaxed.

Assignment: While a song is playing I would like for you to capture the essence of the song by drawing only lines. You want to use a variety of sizes, values, and thicknesses. Make the viewer of the drawing feel the same that listening to the music would. You are creating a visual representation of what the audio would look like. (Example: Visualizers on your computers while listening to music.)

Instructions From The Art Cave....

"Cueva de las Manos (Spanish for Cave of the Hands) is a cave or a series of caves located in the province of Santa Cruz,Argentina, 163 km (101 mi) south of the town of Perito Moreno. It is famous (and gets its name) for the paintings of hands. The art in the cave dates from 13,000 to 9,000 years ago.[1] Several waves of people occupied the cave, and early artwork has been carbon-dated to ca. 9300 BP.[1] The age of the paintings was calculated from the remains of bone-made pipes used for spraying the paint on the wall of the cave to create silhouettes of hands." -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cueva_de_las_Manos

ART 1:
We will be creating our own "Cave of the Hands" for our classroom door. Each student's hand will be represented on the  "Welcome to the Art Cave" door hanging.

Once your hand has been painted, you will be creating a drawing in the "cave painting / carving" style. You must depict a scene from your daily life. You may not use words or thought bubbles. The point is to communicate with others through your images. You will be using a black crayon for these drawings.

ART 2-4:
You will need to have your sketch and proposal together by the end of the period. This proposal is for your first major project. The project title is "Symbolism". You may choose any imagery to tell a story or make a statement. You need to choose non-traditional materials to enhance the projects meaning. The item incorporated needs to be a "symbol" for a deeper meaning.

Wrap It Up Art 1... Getting Started Art 2-4

Art 1 = Today we will be finishing up your cave painting presentations. We will begin presenting these tomorrow, Tuesday! Make sure that each group member will talk about at least one section in the presentation. Remember, you MUST have one RESOURCES slide at the end, or have the resources used on each slide. (Google Images is NOT a Resource! - You must let me know the site that the image is linked to.)

Art 2-4 = You need to have a "Pinterest" account set up and have a board for art ideas! This grade will be given today!! You need to have at least 10 inspiration ideas pinned to your board. If you have decided you are not creating a piece for VASE or have no idea where to start... then... for your first project you will be creating a portrait project using recycled objects. (Pin 10 examples of those!) I want this portrait to make a statement about the person you will be creating. You will be using found objects or recycled items to create this piece. The objects need to enhance the story behind who the person is. It must be an original photo that you have taken of the person.
You may choose to use yourself!!! (preferably)

Check out Jason Mecier if you are stumped for ideas and even if you are not!

Cave Paintings!

In order to fully understand why art is such a huge part of life one must go back to "Cave Paintings"! These pre-historic paintings tell a story and leave images for us to question and learn from today. These people left their "mark" on the world.

Today I will be dividing you up into groups. Within these groups you will be creating a presentation using any method of technology that you would like. (Keynote, Power Point, Prezi, iMovie, etc.) Your presentation needs to cover Cave Paintings!

Questions to answer within your presentation are:

Who?..... What?..... When? .....Where?..... Why?..... How?

Who are the people that created these cave paintings?

What were they creating these paintings for?

When were these cave paintings created?

Where are these paintings located?

Why should we study these paintings today?

How are they relevant to me?

SITE YOUR SOURCES!!!! Have a resource slide where all web addresses are included!

Things to consider:
More than one group of people created cave paintings. How do you want to divide up these groups and time periods within your presentation? The more, the better!! Dive in and explore!!

Yesterday 9/11

For those of you that were absent yesterday, we looked at artwork created by individuals based on their thoughts and feelings towards the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks. While we listened to President Bush's Address to the Nation we viewed these images...

http://painting.about.com/od/submissiongallery/ig/9-11-paintings/

We also took a look at some of my photos taken at the memorial sites from my summer trip to Washington DC and NYC. Here are a few below...

We discussed how artists developed these types of monuments.

Finally, we brainstormed by listing 25 words that came to mind when we heard the numbers 9/11. Next, we took those words and drew for the remainder of class. Students were asked to draw lines and images that reflected their emotions and depicted the 25 words that they came up with.

Rock Hall Gallery Day

You may bring a snack and drink to the "Rock Hall Gallery" opening!

Gallery / Museum Etiquette
-Whisper only when needed.
-Stay a foot away from the artwork.
-DO NOT EVER TOUCH WORK!! (unless the artist directs you to interact with the work)
-No FLASH photography of work in an actual museum or gallery.
-Most galleries do not allow photography and neither do temporary collections at museums.

Critiquing Work Today:
Ask yourself...
-What do you know?
-What can you infer?
-What Elements and Principles did the artist use?
-How does the art make you feel?

Choose 3 "Dot" projects in the gallery to answer the above questions about. Write these answers in your sketchbook or on a sheet of notebook paper.

Paper Work Day!

Today you will need your computer!!

1.) Write a 3-5 sentence explanation about your dot! (You may write more if needed!) Write about how your dot fits your personality. Tell about how the colors and materials enhance the meaning of the work. This “Artist Statement” will be printed and taped under your name in the “Rock Hall Gallery”. You may type these in word or pages. Title it "My Dot" and then begin. All sentences need to start with a capital and end with a period. "I" must be capitalized please!! Once finished print to the "HS lib BW" printer by clicking on "File", "Print".

2.) Now I would like for you to look up the career of “Illustration”. I would like for you to comment on my blog by answering these questions. (Ex. Peter H. Reynolds - The Dot)
-What does an Illustrator do?
-What kind of education or qualifications do you need in order to become an Illustrator?
-What kind of money does an Illustrator make?
-What kind of hours or deadlines would you expect to work or meet in this career field?
-Who is your favorite Illustrator and why?
I would type in word or pages first and then copy/paste to the blog comment location. That way you are able to spell check and if the comment doesn't send you have it saved somewhere else.

These are both due before the start of class on Tuesday!

Dot Work Day

Today we will be creating our personal dot projects! Within the first 5-10 minutes of class you need to gather all of your materials and get busy creating! NO RULES on the criteria for your dots other than they must be school appropriate.

Know if you plan to paint, draw, collage, or sculpt. When I come to you, please be ready to tell me what items you need. Have your sketches out and ready so I can see your vision.

The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds

Warm-up: Read The Dot  by, Peter H. Reynolds

Materials: Sketchbooks & pencils. Mixed media as needed.

Procedures: Divide one page in sketchbook into 4 rectangles. In each one, "make your mark" like "Vashti". Design 4 different dot/ circle/ spherical potential project ideas. Choose what type of materials and colors you will use in order to create your dot. Let the dot you create fit your character and visually describe your personality through it's colors, textures, and uniqueness.

Evaluation: We will be hosting a gallery show (like the book) in the rock hall featuring all students dot creations. The winning dots will be featured in "swirly gold" in the glass case.
