So, before we get started here are the 10 most important tips that I can give you...
Important Information!!!
1. Always start with the lightest color and mix small amounts of the darker color into it until you get your desired color. For example, when mixing light green you would start by putting white in your container because it has no pigment. Next, you would add the color yellow because it is the next lightest color that you will need. Finally, you will mix in the color blue in very small amounts at a time because it will change the color fast.
2. Always write out your plan for mixing your color first and have me approve it! If you are having a hard time getting a desired color, pause and ask what you should do. Never be afraid to ask questions. Color mixing can get a bit confusing.
3. When painting always mix enough paint for the entire area that you are painting and make a little extra to save for touch ups. It is very difficult to remix the exact same color so always have enough for the job. I recommend writing down the formula of the paints you used in your sketchbook and painting a swatch of your color next to the formula just in case.
4. However... never mix way more paint than you will need. The paint is expensive and won't last forever!!
5. Always mix your paints with the end of the paint brush that does NOT have the brush. If you mix with the bristols the paint brush will ruin. Another reason to not mix with the brush is because it absorbs tons of paint that you end up wasting.
6. Make sure that when you are painting you only dip the tip of the brush into the paint. In order to keep the brushes in tact and have them last longer, we need to work hard to not get paint into the metal portion of the brush.
7. Please wash all brushes out with SOAP and WATER by rubbing it carefully into the palm of your hand. You need to soap rinse and repeat until their is not color left rubbing out into your hand. If you do not wash the brushes right it could ruin the next persons painting. Always check your brush before using! If paint is left in them the bristols will become hard and will break off.
8. Please keep the sinks and counters washed and paint drip free! If you drip paint or rinse out paint from a tray or brush please clean up after yourself. It is tough to clean up acrylic paint once it dries! It is much easier while it is still wet.
9. If you get paint on your clothes please let me know immediately if you want to remove the stain. I would recommend bringing an old shirt to paint in. The acrylic paints are very difficult to remove and many times it is impossible once dry.
10. KEEP YOUR PAINTS AWAY FROM YOUR KEYBOARDS!!! Always keep your paint on the opposite side of the desk that your computer is on! If paint gets into the keys there is no way to really clean it out and repair it. Be careful!
Now we are almost ready to mix paint!! BUT here is a quick review and reference page...
Remember these important color combinations:
Yellow + Red = Orange
Orange + More Red = Red-orange
More Yellow + Orange = Yellow-orange (remember the light color is the color you start with)
Yellow + Blue = Green
Green + More Blue = Blue-green
More Yellow + Green = Yellow-green
Red + Blue = Violet
Violet + More Blue = Blue-violet
More Red + Violet = Red-violet
Tints:
White + Red = Pink
White + Yellow = Light Yellow
White + Blue = Baby blue (hardly takes any blue at all to change white!)
White + Orange = Peach
White + Violet = Lavender
White + Green = Light Green
Shades:
Red + Black = Maroon
Yellow + Black = an awful color... lol
Blue + Black = Navy
and so on....
Dulling a color or changing it's intensity:
Add the colors complement!!!
Yellow + Red = Orange + tiny dot of blue = Burnt Orange
Burnt Orange + a little more blue = Brown
Remember when in doubt about a color please ask for help before wasting a bunch of paints!!!
Now... If you do not have any containers to mix into then you will need to clean out some of my old containers to use. Have fun with that! bahahaha
Assignment: Color Designs With Emotion
Divide your cardboard into 4 different sections. In each section paint a design based on an emotion. You must choose a color scheme and title that section with the emotion and the color scheme. I want you to play and experiment with different paint application techniques to see what you like.

This color scheme creator has several other schemes that we did not cover. You may choose to use these as well.
Grades: 5 C's
1. Color Mixing - This grade will be on how well you mix your colors, how much paint you waste, and if you use the correct end of the paint brush.
2. Creativity - This grade will focus on the emotions and color schemes that you choose and how well you portrayed them.
3. Composition - This grade will focus on the elements and principles that you have learned. (Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Repetition, Variety, Unity, Emphasis, etc.) Ask if you would like an individual review.
4. Craftsmanship - This grade will focus on your execution and will be a test grade! I will look at the neatness and the effort put into your work.
5. Clean Up - This grade will be accumulated throughout the week. Your class will be evaluated on how well the counters, sinks, desks, paints, and room as a whole is kept. This grade can be brought down by any one class mate so hold each other accountable.
