Out again... So sorry!!

First of all I would like to apologize for being out for so long! My step father had a heart attack and it has been rough to say the least. He is doing much better and will get to return home today. Therefore, unless some unforeseen circumstance arises, I will be at school on Friday!! With that said you will be having your color theory test on Friday and I expect you all to ace it!!!

VASE students you may continue work on your projects. Storm you may start to paint! All of the new acrylic paint is on the pottery wheel in the corner under the tv. Wash out all brushes and sinks well!! So sorry to the ones waiting on plaster and stuff from me!!!!

Anyway, so I am having issues with Internet connections and am limited to what I am able to post. I am having to make posts from my phone and am unable to link videos, worksheets, and stuff like that. Therefore, I am very limited to the assignments I can give you!

So.....

9. Include your name and class period

Friday you will receive a progress grade!
1 slide = 10

Color Wheel and Color Schemes

Today's assignment will be done by all Art 1-4 students that are not working on their VASE assignments. this assignment will be done in your sketchbooks or on a white page of copy paper. You will be drawing and labeling the color wheel. You must include the primary, secondary, and intermediate colors in there correct order. You must also label the different color schemes on the wheel. You may use any websites that may help you label the wheel correctly.

I tried to post a link to a color wheel below but my phone won't let me link it... Try to copy paste it to your browser. This is just one of millions of color wheel examples.

http://www.offsetprintingtechnology.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/painting-colors-4.gif

Remember that when I return on Thursday, you WILL have a color test and will be asked to label the color wheel, as well as explain the different color schemes and provide examples.

Once you have finished the color wheel and the color notes you will need to decide on a color scheme for your portrait project. You will need to list the colors as well as the scheme in your sketchbooks. You will also need to find a work of art on the Internet that uses the color scheme that you have chosen. Once you find the image that inspires you, save the image and the artist to your desktop, in an art folder.

I am so sorry that I am not in class to help you all with these assignments. Please do the best you can! I expect great reports from the subs when I return.

Best Wishes, Mrs. Stewart

Color Theory Assignment

Color is the element of art that we will be focused on for your portrait projects. You will be using color to depict your personality in your self-portrait paintings. It is important to understand how colors can work together to create harmony. When you put more than one color in a combination it can be beautiful or completely awful. There is a theory to color and there are rules and combinations one should consider when choosing their combinations.

Assignment: You will choose a partner to read and review the following vocabulary with. You will need to be prepared for a pop-quiz without a review at any time! I will narrow it down by saying it will be either Tuesday the 20th or Tuesday the 27th. BE PREPARED!!! Once you have finished reading the vocabulary you will need to create these color combinations in your sketchbooks. You will each use magazines to find the colors and you will past those colors into your individual sketchbooks next to the scheme name. There will be 13 vocabulary words that you will need to cut the colors for. You must each have your own examples however you may work together to get them.

Grades: You will receive a grade for your magazine color clippings. You will also receive a grade for your ability to work in pairs. (If the sub gets on to you or writes you up for any reason the highest grade you may receive is a 70. If the sub doesn't record your name then you will receive a 100.) Finally you will receive a "Color Theory Pop-Quiz" grade, which will count as a test grade. There are 3 grades total.

Vocabulary:
The basic colors are "Primary Colors". These colors are "Red, Yellow, and Blue". These colors cannot be mixed by any two other colors. They are the basic building blocks that create all of your other colors.

The "Secondary Colors" consist of "Orange, Violet, and Green". These colors are mixed by combining two primary colors.
RED+YELLOW=ORANGE;   RED+BLUE=VIOLET;   YELLOW+BLUE=GREEN
(We will use the name "Violet" instead of "Purple" even though they seem the same. It will make it easier to distinguish between the colors on the color wheel that way... you will soon see.)

"Intermediate Colors" or "Tertiary Colors" are the third in the order or level of the colors. These colors are mixed in the same way as the secondary colors, however, more of one primary color is added than the other to vary its appearance. There are 6 intermediate colors and they are "Red-orange, Yellow-orange, Yellow-green, Blue-green, Blue-violet, and Red-violet". For example, if you are mixing red-orange you would need to have more red in the orange than yellow. The color would look more "reddish than yellowish".

"Triadic Color Schemes" are color combinations that generally look pleasing to the eye together. These combinations create a triangle on the color wheel. The three primary colors create a triadic color scheme. The secondary colors also create a triadic color scheme. There are two sets of triadic combinations within the intermediate colors.

"Analogous Color Schemes" are color combinations of 3-5 colors that are side by side on the color wheel. For example, Red, Red-orange, and Orange create an analogous combination. Blue, Blue-green, Green, Yellow-green, and Yellow would also create an analogous color scheme.

"Complementary Color Schemes" are created when you use two colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel. These colors are the furthest apart from one another. They seem to "complement" each other. It is like the idea that opposites attract. One color is a cool, while the other is warm. (We will get to those definitions in a second.) It is the idea of fire and ice... opposing forces. These colors create high contrast and really case the other to stand out. Many holidays and athletic teams use complementary colors to create interest. Example: Blue and Orange;  Red and Green;  Yellow and Violet

"Cool Colors" are colors that appear to be colder. These colors are usually considered moody, calm, quiet, and relaxing. These colors consist of violet, blue-violet, blue, blue-green, and green. (red-violet and yellow-green are border colors... they can go either way.

"Warm Colors" are colors that appear to be hot. These colors are usually associated with feelings of love or anger. They can give a feeling of anxiety, warmth, passion, boldness, or make one feel hyper. These colors consist of red, red-orange, orange, yellow-orange, and yellow. Again, yellow- green and red-violet can tend to go either way. However, yellow-green seems more warm than red-violet to me....

A "Tint" of a color is a lighter value of that color. When you add "WHITE" to that color you will get a tint of it. If you add white to red you will get a tint of red which, would be a pink color.

A "Shade" of a color is a darker value of that color. When you add "BLACK" to that color you will get a shade of it. If you add black to red you will get a shade of red, which would be a maroon color.

A "Tone" is a color created when adding "GREY" to a color. You would mix black into your white to get grey... then you would add that to the color to mute it.

The "Monochromatic Color Scheme" uses only one color as well as any combination of the tints, shades, and tones that can be made from that color. "One Color" is the key to this definition though you may have many different values of that one color. Example: Red, Maroon, and Pink

In order to change a colors "intensity" or "dull" it.... you would add a tiny amount of the colors complement to it. This causes the color to appear less vibrant and can mute it a bit. For example, if you take orange and add its complementary color, blue, you would get a burnt orange look. If you continue mixing the two in larger amounts you will create a "BROWNish" color and may even create a "GREYish" color. These colors are considered "Neutral colors". They are neither warm nor cool.

Remember:
Keep talk on topic and keep your voices low. You must only speak to your partner throughout the class period. Keep off of any other sites, applications, and games on your computers. When you are reading the vocabulary to each other there will be no music played. You may listen to your music once you begin you color clippings. However, when listening to music you must keep your computer 1/2 closed. You must make sure that you return all of your materials to the desk and keep the magazines organized and neat. You must also clean up any clippings or glue that may cause a mess to your work area. If you are caught breaking ANY of these rules the sub will write down your name and it will result in a grade of "70". If you are repeatedly breaking these rules your grade will result in a "0"!

Be on your best behavior! Try your best!! And MAKE ME PROUD!!!

Best Wishes, Mrs. StewART
